Farid Belkahia : For a New Modernity

19 MAY - 19 JUL 2021, 11AM – 08PM, EVERY DAYS EXCEPT TUESDAYS

GALERIE D'ART GRAPHIQUE AND GALERIE DU MUSÉE - CENTRE POMPIDOU, PARIS

In collaboration with the Centre Pompidou Paris and the Farid Belkahia Foundation in Marrakech, this exhibition dedicated to Farid Belkahia (1934, Marrakesh - 2014, Marrakesh) - today considered to be one of the founders of Moroccan artistic modernity and, more broadly, Arab.

Farid Belkahia’s production constitutes one of the great aesthetic successes of the postcolonial era. It is distinguished by its conception of modernity in dialogue with vernacular traditions and ancestral art, breaking with many Western avant-gardes which advocated a tabula rasa.

The exhibition traces the main sequences in the work of Farid Belkahia, from Prague and the Expressionist period to works on animal hides and the poetry of signs, including the Casablanca School and the choice of copper. It brings together nearly 140 works — paintings, drawings, sculptures, hides and coppers — with one major piece, Hommage à Gaston Bachelard [Homage to Gaston Bachelard] (1984), which joined the Centre Pompidou collection in 2013

This exhibition has been developed in the framework of a partnership with the Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, and close collaboration with the Farid Belkahia Foundation in Marrakesh.
